Falling “Man”ning?

Updated October 11, 2013 at 4:36 PM

At the culmination of the 2011 season the New York Giants were on top of the world. They won Super Bowl XLVI, capturing the Lombardi trophy, but since then much has changed. The Giants (0-5) have fallen from the top of the world to the bottom of their division. According to Pro Football Reference, quarterback Eli Manning’s stats have dropped considerably as well.

The only number that has risen for Manning is interceptions thrown. In the entire 2011 season Manning threw 16 interceptions. He’s just four picks short of that number this season. Through five games this season the quarterback has thrown 12 passes to the other team.

A drastic change has come to his quarterback rating. His rating this year is nearly 27 points lower than it was in 2011.

However, Rich Hanley, Chair of the Quinnipiac University Athletic Council, says the problems aren’t all the quarterback’s fault.

“This is not a problem with Manning alone. He needs a better offensive line and a running game to give him time to find an open receiver,” said Hanley. ” Defenses clearly don’t respect the Giants’ running game, so the defensive line just goes all-in in a rush to the quarterback. Linebackers, because they don’t have to worry about the run, can take a step back to cover the middle of the field which shuts down alleys and makes it harder to throw.”

Hanley says that with a better offensive line and running game, Manning can return to his old form.

“His skills haven’t diminished,” said Hanley. “He may just be panicking a bit.”
